Why This Matters

UV radiation. Triple-digit heat for weeks straight. Then a downpour that dumps two inches in an hour. Then back to baking. The cycle repeats from April through October, year after year.

That’s what your deck endures. And most decks in Williamson County were built with the bare minimum — construction-grade lumber, basic fasteners, and a single coat of stain that faded before the first summer ended.

By year three, you’re seeing cupped boards. By year five, the stain is gone and the wood is graying. By year seven, you’ve got nails popping, boards splitting, and — if nobody’s looked underneath — joist damage from moisture that’s been sitting where it shouldn’t.

The surface problems are annoying. The structural problems underneath are what cost real money if you wait.

Our Approach

Metro Service Pros doesn’t start with the surface. We start underneath.

Structural inspection first. Before we replace a single board, we check the substructure — joists, ledger board, posts, footings, and hardware. Most deck failures start below what you can see. Rotting joists, corroded joist hangers, and posts that weren’t set in concrete properly are the issues that turn a repair into a replacement. We catch them early.

Board replacement and matching. When boards need replacing, we match the species and dimensions. If your deck is cedar, we use cedar — not pressure-treated pine mixed in. We match the grain direction and sand the new boards to the same smoothness as the existing surface. After staining, the new boards blend in.

Staining and sealing done right. After repairs, we sand the deck surface and apply a penetrating stain — not a surface film that peels after one Texas summer. Penetrating stain soaks into the wood fibers and protects from the inside out. We use products rated for high-UV environments because that’s where your deck lives.

New construction. Building a new deck from scratch? We design for your space, your budget, and this climate. Proper footings, structural-grade lumber, stainless or coated fasteners that won’t corrode, and a finish built for Central Texas weather. We can build custom features in our workshop — bench seating, planter boxes, custom stair stringers, privacy screens — and install them on-site.

The Workshop Advantage

Custom railing and components from our workshop. This is where our shop makes the difference. If your railing needs repair and the balusters or cap rail are a custom profile, we don’t tell you to settle for something from the hardware store. We take measurements back to the shop and mill what you need. Same species, same profile, same look. Need a built-in bench? Planter boxes? A privacy screen? We fabricate them in the workshop and install them on-site.

Frequently Asked Questions

Replacing a few boards and restaining runs $300-$800. Structural repairs — joist replacement, post work, ledger board repair — range from $500-$2,000+ depending on scope. A full deck build typically starts around $3,000 for a basic design and goes up with size, materials, and custom features. We quote every job individually after inspecting the deck.

Walk on it. If you feel bounce, softness, or movement — especially near where the deck attaches to your house — something's wrong underneath. Other signs: nails pushing up through boards, visible rot on posts, leaning railings, and gaps between the deck and the house. We check all of this during our inspection.

Both work. Cedar is naturally rot-resistant, looks warm, and can be restained as it ages — but it requires maintenance every 1-2 years. Composite handles UV and moisture better out of the box and won't need staining, but it gets noticeably hotter underfoot in direct Texas sun and costs more upfront. We build with both and can help you decide based on your sun exposure, maintenance tolerance, and budget.

Every 1-2 years for cedar or pine decks in Central Texas. The south- and west-facing sections fade faster — you may need to hit those annually. If water no longer beads on the surface, the stain has worn through. Our Maintenance Plan catches stain condition before it fails completely.

We build pergolas, shade structures, and basic patio covers as part of our deck and outdoor work. For larger covered structures that require engineering, we'll connect you with Metro Custom Builders.
